Earlier this year we were approached by Cancer Research UK with a view to producing a fly through drone tour of their Cambridge Institute building to highlight the institutes’ very important work in a film allied to funding announcements vital to funding this work.
The Cambridge Institute building is based in a very busy research park area of Cambridge and is situated just behind Cambridge’s main hospital. It’s a busy area, and the building itself is always buzzing with research scientists committed to their work and contains not only lots of large research labs but also a lecture theatre and cafe in addition to staff offices.
One of the challenges for filming this building was starting from an exterior that is not only busy with pedestrian traffic, cyclists and cars but also on the approach to Cambridge airport. Once inside the building as mentioned is very busy with people moving around all of the time but is also home to labs where important scientific work looking at curing and curtailing Cancer takes place. This all made for an intimidating place to work the drones but with help from CRUK staff and some great volunteers helping us keep filming safe and acting in various areas we managed to hopefully show the building as the Hub for research it is.
During filming, we had a drone attacked by a Sparrow Hawk (neither were injured), filmed through a live lecture theatre, operated the drones whilst being pushed along in a wheelchair, flew through science labs, tissue culture examination areas, offices, reception areas, lunch time fussball overflight, and filmed the transition into a VR experience exploring the interior of a cancer tumour to end the film.
There was lots of liaison with numerous agencies, range testing, planning, maps, plans, changes to plans, battery changes, volunteers, acting, and help from the great people at the CRUK, and finally a great Voice over added.
We hope you like the film and that it gives you an insight rarely seen of the work at a Cancer fighting hub.
